Alumni Success Stories

TONI&GUY Hairdressing Academy alumni are highly sought after throughout multiple beauty industries including makeup, product development, and education to name only a few. Many of our alumni have gone on to be everything from celebrity stylists to being on television to stepping up as the CEOs of their own companies. Here are just a few of their stories.

Alfredo Llamas

Freelance Celebrity Hair Stylist

Alfredo Llamas was initially drawn to attend TONI&GUY Hairdressing Academy because of the brand’s renowned reputation as educational leaders in the hairdressing industry. When he began his education at the Santa Monica campus in Los Angeles, California he correlated the school’s clean & modern design with fashion forward yet viable salon techniques he was taught inside of the classroom. Following graduation, Alfredo worked behind the chair and forged relationships within the fashion industry – eventually styling designer, Jeremy Scott. His relationship with Scott opened the door to working at NYFW under the tutelage of legendary session stylist, Eugene Souleimans as part of his team. Alfredo’s career successes include working with celebrities such as Bjork, Iggy Azalea, Rita Ora, M.I.A., Havana Brown, Devon Aoki and recently Katy Perry. His work has been featured in publications such as Vogue Japan, Billboard Magazine, Flaunt, i-D, and Jalouse. He still maintains a close working relationship with Jeremy Scott and has worked on various campaigns for the designer including Adidas and Moschino.

Sarah Udink

Owner and Director of Frankie Rose Cosmetics

Sarah Udink chose TONI&GUY Academy in Costa Mesa, California because of its history of being one of the best educational institutions in the world. Her experience with TONI&GUY allowed her to be creative with her skills on photo shoots and fashion weeks that were beyond typical school experiences.

Udnik had always been interested in makeup, but after graduating and getting her license she could take her skills above and beyond. Sarah quickly began working for a manufacturing company, started designing cosmetics packaging and soon became the creative artist behind the makeup brand where she was responsible for their photo shoots, colour and formulations, and with the branding of the company. She eventually launched Frankie Rose Cosmetics which can be found in the United States in high-end boutique destinations.

“I could not have been this successful without the education and high standards taught to me by TONI&GUY Hairdressing Academy,” said Sarah. “How amazing is it to get the best education in something you love with the best hairdressing company!”

Brian Aguilar

Brian Aguilar was inspired by his freshman instructor, Ashley Berryhill at the TONI&GUY Hairdressing Academy in Costa Mesa, California. Berryhill eventually became the director of the Santa Monica TONI&GUY Hairdressing Academy. After graduating, Brian began working at the TONI&GUY Salon in Newport Beach, California where he quickly built his clientele and helped develop a new learning program for new stylists coming into the company. The program offered a way for incoming professionals to keep refining their skills while continuing to pursue their hairdressing career.

“Seeing her artistry and watching her grow into her new role in the company amazed me,” said Aguilar. “Following her growth gave me the inspiration to be the best hairdresser I can be.”

Berry Bachen

Berry Bachen has been a leading professional in the beauty industry for over 14 years and has become a trusted educator instructing advanced hair colour courses. Her primary focus is the MAIN ENTRANCE Artists initiative, a collaborative artist development destination for non-brand education. Bachen acquired her expertise during her long tenure as Creative Director-at-Large for TIGI Colour, teaching technique and theory around the world and presenting on stage at major beauty shows. Her progressive and adaptive aesthetic has lent invaluable input to 10 years of TIGI collections and structured authorship of TIGI course content. Berry has been honored multiple times as a NAHA finalist, most recently in 2014 for Hair Colourist of the Year and in 2013 and 2014 for Salon Team of the Year. The stylist’s core goal is effortless colour with impact. Tireless curiosity about technique, inspiration and trends is both her chief asset as a colourist and her distinction as an educator. MAIN ENTRANCE is the lens for the hair guru’s energetically unique viewpoint.

“My experience with TONI&GUY taught me the importance of technical discipline, while providing access and exposure to the renowned creative talents of the company,” remarked Berry.

He eventually found his true love for hairstyling at the TONI&GUY Hairdressing Academy of Carrollton, Texas. After graduating and working in top salons, the stylist became the owner of Anchors Hair Company, a natural, hand-crafted hair product line that gives part of its proceeds toward helping wounded veterans find therapy through barbering or cosmetology school.

His line has been featured in GQ-British, Modern Dallas, Gentleman's Ave Magazine and AP Magazine. The products can be found several Whole Foods Markets and has an expanding salon and barbershop base.

Rachel Brumbaugh

TONI&GUY Hairdressing Regional Director

Rachel Brumbaugh’s first TONI&GUY experience was at an advanced course in New York City. After realizing that a strong educational foundation was the key to unlocking a wealth of potential, she decided to dedicate her career to learning, sharing and bringing out the same passion she has for hairdressing, in others. Knowing she wanted to focus on education, she earned her instructor license in 2006, moved across the country to California and worked as a stylist at the TONI&GUY Hairdressing Salon in Newport Beach. Rachel became an instructor at the first West Coast TONI&GUY Hairdressing Academy in Santa Monica and was then promoted to Education Director. She then moved to the Costa Mesa campus, where she became the Academy Director. She was lucky enough to continue the creative side of her career with TONI&GUY through traveling across the country teaching hairdressing, working on photoshoots with top designers, and working on fashion shows including Los Angeles and New York Fashion Week. She was honored as Hairdresser of the Year for TONI&GUY twice and continues to express her creative side through photoshoots and editorial work. Brumbaugh is now the Regional Director for the West Coast TONI&GUY Hairdressing Academies.

“Choosing to begin a career with TONI&GUY so many years ago is still the best decision I have ever made and I am excited to share the possibilities that are within reach with my students and staff every day.”
