Interviewing for Your First Job as a Stylist

With the beauty industry continuing to grow, there are so many exciting career opportunities that could be available to you as a beauty professional! The first step to making this dream become a reality is completing the necessary training at an accredited beauty school, but what about what comes after that?

We know that even as a beauty graduate, it can be intimidating to take the next step and interview for your first job as a stylist. A lot of people are nervous about it, which is why we want to help! Here are our tips of how you can have a great interview for your start to the industry you love.

Come Prepared

From the moment you meet, employers will be looking for qualities they want from people on their team. By showing up prepared to show what skills you can offer, the person interviewing will know that you’re serious about wanting the job. Trust, us, it makes a huge difference in setting a positive tone for the rest of your interview! If you’re not sure what you should bring to be prepared, we list it all out for you below.

Professional Resume

Most job interviews require you to bring a resume of your basic information and previous work experience. The beauty industry is no different! Although you won’t have a lot of job experience for your first job, it will be exciting when you can add all the things you’ve accomplished while working as a beauty professional. If you’re not sure what you should include in your resume, here’s a list to give you a good idea of how to get it started:

  • First and last name
  • Contact information
  • Your education summary
  • Relevant experience in the industry

This is also where you can include a recommendation from a beauty professional to help you stand out. Your time in beauty school can be the perfect opportunity to make these connections with people who have a background in the industry.

Your Portfolio

Employers want to make sure that you’re able to perform a variety of beauty services that depend on where you’re working. That’s why you want to make sure that you take every opportunity to show off your creative skills during beauty school. At TONI&GUY Hairdressing Academy, part of our cosmetology program includes a portion where students can participate in exciting events. From field trips and photoshoots to other creative projects, we want to make sure that you have lots of experience that sets you apart from other graduates.
